History of the Bodleian Library 1845-1945. book includes the principal University library - the Bodleian Library - which has been a legal deposit library for years; as well as 28 other libraries across Oxford including major research libraries and faculty, department and institute libraries.
The history of the Library is also a history of collectors and collections, and this book traces the story of major donations and purchases, making use of the Library’s own substantial archives to show how it came to house key items such as early confirmations of the Magna Carta, Shakespeare’s First Folio, and the manuscript of Jane Austen.
In the decision was taken to build a new library, with space for 5 million books, library departments and reading rooms, on a site occupied by a row of old timber houses on the north side of Broad Street. The New Bodleian, as it was known then.
